Directory of services to help abuse survivors
VICTIMS and survivors of sexual violence and abuse in Northern Ireland can now avail of a new directory of services.
The Regional Directory of Services – launched by Health Minister Michael McGimpsey yesterday – is designed for easy access by victims and survivors as well as health professionals and others working in the sector.
The initiative is the first of its kind in the Province and brings together details on the range of services, both in the statutory and voluntary sectors.
Those affected can now acquire information on specialist counselling and also seek more details on how to report sexual violence and abuse.
Hailing the development, Mr McGimpsey said: “For the first time in Northern Ireland, information on where help can be sought for those affected by sexual violence and abuse has been collated in one place.
“With an estimated 80-85 per cent of incidences of sexual violence going unreported, it is essential that people are made aware of the support and help available to them should they need it.”
The directory is available free from a range of public places including GP surgeries, libraries, voluntary and community groups. It can also be obtained online via http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/wrong.
