Drama group to stage hit musical

A GROUP of Co Down teenagers are set to perform Disney's High School Musical on stage next month before the rights to the production are frozen.

St Patrick's Choral Society is performing the stage version of the blockbuster movie at The Great Hall in Downpatrick.

The youth section of the amateur drama society will be performing the hit show – which became the most watched programme for the Disney Channel last year – in October.

Tickets are already selling fast, with one night sold out and others looking set to follow suit.

Gareth McGreevy, vice-chairperson of the society, will be playing radio DJ Jack Scott and said it was a great feeling to be involved in the show.

"We were very lucky to get it," he said.

"It has given us a chance to do a show that everyone likes.

"The cast are loving it – they are working hard and dancing their feet off. It's amazing to watch."

But, he warned, the stage show isn't exactly the same as the movie – there are two new songs and a megamix at the end for the audience to sing along to.

"Overall, I think it adds to the show," he said.

l The show runs from October 23-27. Tickets cost 8 and are available from Gordon's Chemist in Downpatrick, Smyth's Musique in Newcastle or Gareth McGreevy on 077 86 837 198.
