Dunlop helmet goes under the hammer

A PIECE of road racing memorabilia belonging to the late Joey Dunlop has been auctioned off for over £2,000 at a special fundraising event.

An original yellow helmet - as famously worn by the racing legend - went under the hammer at a gala black tie function in Belfast on Friday night.

The event was organised to raise funds for the David Wood Project – an initiative aimed at resurrecting the Ulster Grand Prix House on the Dundrod circuit, which would be used as a race control tower incorporating medical facilities at the historic international road race.

Wood - who managed Joey's illustrious career - was himself an ambassador for road racing before his untimely death in 2004.

The helmet, which was the prized asset on the night, was eventually purchased for 2,600 by a Lisburn buyer.

Event co-ordinator James Courtney said demand was high and numerous telephone bids were also accepted during the auction.

"It was a good night all round," he said.

Mr Courtney could not put a definitive figure on the total amount raised, but he deemed the evening a huge success.

The event was compered by broadcaster Jackie Fullerton.

Ballymoney-born Dunlop tragically died doing what he loved best, involved in an accident in a road race in Estonia in 2000.

He won a total of 26 races at the famous Isle of Man TT.

His younger brother, Robert, died during practice at this year's North West 200 in Portrush.
