Eight Ulster libraries spared axe
EIGHT libraries across Northern Ireland have been saved from closure.
However, libraries in Moy and Moneymore – both in Co Tyrone – have been axed in the review of the public service provision.
In a statement released yesterday, Libraries NI said the facilities in Greystone, Kells and Connor, and Richhill would continue to operate in their current premises with a progress review in two years to ensure that usage targets are met and that the library is sustainable in the long term.
In four other locations – Carnlough, Draperstown, Fintona and Killyleagh – work is under way in conjunction with other bodies, either to improve the current premises or investigate a possible alternative location for the library. But three libraries, Gilford, Moy and Moneymore, “cannot continue to be justified as they are not fit for purpose
or sustainable”.
However Gilford has been given a lifeline with a proposal to locate new library facilities within a new
community centre, which is yet to be built.
Chairperson of Libraries NI Nigel Macartney, acknowledged the level of public response to the controversial
proposal.
“The level of feedback received through the public consultation process was significant and the board has listened
and responded by agreeing to work with local groups and communities.
“It is important that this opportunity is embraced and customers continue to work with Libraries NI to continue to
promote and improve library use,” said Mr Macartney.
Irene Knox, Chief executive of Libraries NI, said it was “regrettable to close any library”.
“However, it is essential that we take a realistic view of libraries that are not fit for purpose or are unsustainable in terms of future use and costs,” she said.
Newry and Armagh MLA Danny Kennedy praised the successful efforts made to keep Richhill library open.
“This is brilliant news for the people of Richhill,” he said.
