Elderly man dies in forklift accident

A WELL respected businessman in his 70s has died after falling from his forklift truck in Fermanagh.

The man, named locally as Norman Hanna, was working at business premises in Ballinamallard when the accident happened at around 2pm on Wednesday.

It is believed Mr Hanna – an electrical contractor – fell to the ground from a safety cage on the forklift and suffered serious head injuries.

He died a short time later at the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen.

A PSNI spokesman said they were preparing a report for the coroner and that the Health and Safety Executive had been informed.

Ulster Unionist MLA for the area, Tom Elliott, said he knew the victim and the owners of the business premises.

"His death is a huge tragedy for the family and the entire community," he said.

"Norman was a very, very well known and successful businessman."

Local UUP councillor Bertie Kerr, who also knew Mr Hanna, said he was "a very respectable man and as nice a man as you could meet".

"He will be sorely missed by all who knew him."
