Ex-Formula One star takes spin around city

FORGET Monaco - all eyes were on Belfast city centre at the weekend as a Formula One racing legend took to the streets to wow the crowds.

An estimated 18,000 people gathered at the City Hall on Saturday evening to see 13-time Grand Prix champion David Coulthard hit speeds of 170 miles per hour as he whizzed around the city's streets in a Red Bull racing car.

The Scotsman said he was thrilled to be in Ulster's capital for his first ever night-time racing display.

"There's an amazing atmosphere here," he said after the event.

"This is the first time we've done a night run in a city and to come here to the city of Belfast with its great tradition of motorsports has been really enjoyable for me. The enthusiasm of the people was just unbelievable."

Comparing the road conditions before he took off in what was described as an unforgettable display of speed, power and control, David acknowledged the challenge presented by the different road surface.

"Other than in Monaco, these cars are not designed to go on the streets. It's a little bit bumpy, but that's to be expected as it's usually used for buses and traffic but there's a nice turn out of people so we'll give it a shot."

Throughout the day Formula One fans visited the garage and 10-strong team of technicians who travel the world throughout the racing season looking after the prized race cars and their famous cargo.

Crowds were treated to a dramatic finale as car engine heats exceeded 140 degrees and stewards were on hand with fire extinguishers.

Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Naomi Long thanked all those involved in bringing the event to Belfast for a wonderful evening's entertainment.

"What a spectacle for Belfast and what an event to have in the heart of the city," said the Lord Mayor.

"I'm sure that the city's citizens and visitors will have left with amazing memories and images of not only the Red Bull Formula One car but of their night out in Belfast city centre.

"A big thank you goes to Red Bull for bringing this event to our city and to all the organisations that pulled this together - truly an unforgettable evening for Belfast!"
