Father dies of 'broken heart'

THE father of a murdered Castlederg teenager, whose body has never been found in 14 years, has died.

William Arkinson will now not have the opportunity to bury his beloved daughter has had been his wish.

Arlene was 15-years-old when she went missing after returning from a night out at a disco near her home village in 1994.

The 68-year-old died at his Co Tyrone home on Wednesday after suffering a heart attack.

Daughter, Kathleen believes her father died from a broken heart, having never been reunited with Arlene.

"He was depressed - I think it was because of Arlene. He never got over it. He would have loved to have been able to have buried her," she said.

"He's never got to see that. But maybe he's at peace with her."

Serial sex offender, Robert Howard has been acquitted of the murder despite having been with Arlene on the night of her disappearance.

Howard was cleared of murdering Arlene in June 2005. He had given her a lift with two friends from a disco in the seaside town of Bundoran, Co.Donegal. He insisted in court that Arlene got out of the car after he dropped off the others.

The Police Ombudsman has also found police had not searched Arlene's home in the immediate aftermath of her disappearance.

The teenager's body has never been found despite intensive searches around the Donegal border.
