Healy set to score with DVD
THERE may be only just over five weeks to Christmas but there is no doubt what will be on the top of every member of the Green and White Army's festive wish list.
Offering a unique and unprecedented insight into the life of Northern Ireland's record goalscorer, a special DVD – David Healy - The Talisman – was launched personally by the ace marksman himself yesterday.
Healy – who will lead the line for his country in a friendly at Windsor Park tonight against Hungary – has become a sporting icon for his goalscoring exploits on the international stage.
Avid supporters will be able to relive the highlights of the 29-year-old striker's incident-packed career to date in the emerald green shirt of his country, including a first hand account of the recent rollercoaster European Championship qualifying campaign when Healy scored a record-breaking 13 goals.
In surpassing Davor Suker's European record, the Sunderland frontman won many admirers, including current UEFA president and French legend Michel Platini, who speaks highly of the duminitive number nine in the production.
Since bursting onto the scene with a two-goal salvo against Luxembourg on his debut eight years ago, Healy made light work of Colin Clarke's longstanding international record of 13 goals and is currently averaging a goal every other game for his country, with 35 in 69 appearances.
Suffering along with his teammates during an infamous 1,298 minutes without a goal, Healy was at the forefront of the re-emergence of the pride and belief associated with playing for Northern Ireland, scoring the winning goal in the moment's victory over England, a never-to-be-forgotten hat-trick against Spain and hitting the back of the net in famous wins over Sweden and Denmark.
In never seen before footage, Healy shares his private side as a father and husband at his family home, provides a tour of his trophy room and relaxes on the golf driving range.
Speaking to Jackie Fullerton, Killyleagh's most famous son also reveals an ambition to one day lead his country from the touchline.
"I would like to give something back to Northern Ireland, be it coaching young kids or teenagers," he says.
"Coaching is something though I will look to do and if I was doing well at a club and the opportunity to manage Northern Ireland came along in 10 or 20 years' time, who knows?
"It is not an ambition at the moment, but I wouldn't be against managing my country."
For the moment though, the fans' favourite just wants to keep doing what he does best: "Right now though I want to continue to win as many caps and score as many goals for my country."
An Irish FA spokesman revealed the association has already been inundated with inquiries regarding the new DVD.
"The IFA are extremely proud of what David has achieved and we fully endorse this production – we think the DVD is a fabulous idea and expect it to be a popular Christmas present," he said.
David Healy – The Talisman is available now from all good retail outlets priced at 16.99.
