Homophobia 'has no place in society'
HOMOPHOBIA has no place in a civilised society, gay rights campaigners have said.
They were speaking at the launch of a special "travelling" billboard at Belfast City Hall.
The billboard has been developed by the Rainbow Project, Cara Friend and Lesbian Advocacy Service Initiative, in partnership with The Equality Commission NI, and will be making its way throughout the Province this week to mark Northern Ireland Anti-Homophobia Week.
The Rainbow Project's chairperson, Vince Creelan, said that despite many positive legislative changes in Northern Ireland, homophobia remains a daily issue.
"The key theme of this year's campaign therefore is 'lesbian, gay, bisexual or straight – we are all people – homophobia has no place in a civilised society', which we believe will allow people to become more aware about the prejudice that still exists in our society," said Mr Creelan.
Bob Collins, chief commissioner of the Equality Commission for NI, met members of various lesbian, gay and bisexual groups at the City Hall before the billboard was taken round the city. It then headed on to Lisburn, Banbridge and Newry.
On Wednesday, it will travel back from Coleraine via various towns and then park in front of Parliament Buildings at Stormont from 3pm onwards as part of the Rainbow Project's 15th birthday celebrations in the Long Gallery.
