Injured soldier 'ready to return to the front line'
ONE of the Ulster soldiers injured in a bomb attack says he is ready to go back to the front line.
The brave Londonderry man, Ranger David Pepper, was driving a Land Rover which was blown apart by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Helmand Province, Friday week ago.
David, 22, suffered shrapnel wounds to his arm and back, as did two other soldiers from 1st Battalion Royal Irish.
A soldier from an English-based regiment was also wounded, while three more Royal Irish soldiers were injured rushing to the scene.
Despite continuing pain in his back, David – a hardened soldier who first served in Afghanistan during the troubled 2006 tour – is keen to return to the base in Sangin.
"I am still a bit sore on my back but otherwise I am not troubled by it," he told the News Letter.
Earlier this week the News Letter reported on how David and his co-injured colleague Ranger Martin Delaney, 23, from Lusk in Co Dublin, joked about their rivalry over Celtic football club.
Martin was delighted when hospital staff at the Camp Bastion medical facility gave him a Celtic football towel to use, while David asked for a change.
David returns to Northern Ireland early next month for a period of rest and relaxation.
"After that I return to Sangin base, where I will be back to work – back to what has become normality," he said.
Like dozens of his fellow battalion members, David is a veteran of the 2006 Royal Irish tour, when three platoons bolstered the Parachute Regiment.
The tour was marked by brutal battles between British soldiers and Taliban insurgents.
David said that for all the present risks, the current Royal Irish operation was not as dangerous as two years ago: "It has been a lot quieter than 2006, when there were more gunfights.
"You could shoot the enemy then. This time you can't see them – it is more IEDs."
