Lewis snubbed Queen’s award
OUR very own CS Lewis was just one of 277 people who have rejected honours from the Queen, it was revealed yesterday.
A list released yesterday includes the names of anyone who rejected an honour between 1951 and 1999.
The information – but only for those who are now dead – had been protected by the Cabinet Office until a BBC Freedom of Information request.
It is not clear from the list why the Belfast-born Mr Lewis, known for his great writing achievements, turned down the CBE.
Mr Lewis, whose most famous work is The Chronicles of Narnia, which has sold over 100 million copies and translated into 41 languages, was known to be modest about his achievements.
The author declined the honour in 1952, just over a decade before his death. That was the same year in which The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was released.
Among the other prominent figures revealed to have rejected honours was Irish-born officer Roger Casement, who forfeited an award. Sir Alfred Hitchcock rejected an honour in 1962 but later accepted a knighthood.
