'Loving mother and wife' is laid to rest

HUNDREDS of mourners yesterday attended the funeral service of a "very loving and capable wife, mother and grandmother" who died in a freak road accident last weekend.

Mavis Rolston, 67, from Garvary in Enniskillen, was returning home on Saturday evening from a Mothers’ Union meeting in Dublin. It is understood she had stopped her vehicle near Belturbet in Co Cavan for a short break, and when she walked in front of the family jeep it rolled forward and hit her.

Canon John Stewart, of Holy Trinity Church of Ireland in Garvary, yesterday said her death had been a “terrible trauma for her family”.

Addressing mourners during the funeral service, Canon Stewart told how Mrs Rolston was well-respected and heavily involved with church organisations.

He said: “She was dedicated and dependable. If she belonged to something she would be an active member. She would be there.

“She might be a little late, but she would be there.”

The clergyman also recalled how, before her marriage to Desmond, Mrs Rolston had been social worker after graduating from Queen’s University.

“Desmond and Mavis had four children, Francis, Maria, Nial and Rebecca. Nial died shortly after his first birthday. He was never far from Mavis’ thoughts.”

Canon Stewart added that Mrs Rolston was known for her “great way with words and a wonderful turn of phrase”.

He said Mrs Rolston’s’ “friendly smile and jolly laugh were well known”.

“She never held a grudge and was a strong believer in working things out in a non- confrontational manner.

“A loving wife, a proud mother and grandmother, a caring sister and aunt, and a good friend. Her passing is a great loss to the community and to the church of which she was a weekly attender and a devoted member.”
