Maze stadium proposal officially scrapped

A sports stadium will not be build on the former Maze prison site, it was officially confirmed today.

The Province's Culture Minister Gregory Campbell told the Assembly he has recommended scrapping the proposal.

He said the millions of pounds earmarked might now be spent on other sports projects.

He now faces criticism from various parties, who are claiming he has effectively wasted the 3.6 million spent so far on the stadium plan.

SDLP MLA for Foyle Pat Ramsey said the plans constituted a waste of public money.

"People will be shocked and alarmed that so much investment was put in place for it not to go ahead," he said.

"It doesn't take away from the original concept for a regional stadium encompassing the three major sports to build a shared future.

"It would have enabled Northern Ireland to host some of the events for the 2012 Olympics so that is a crying shame as well."
