McNarry quits UUP Assembly team
Ulster Unionist MLA David McNarry has announced this evening that he has resigned from the UUP Assembly group.
The move comes after Mr McNarry revealed earlier this week that he had been in talks with the DUP “for months”.
At around 8pm, Mr McNarry issued a press statement following a phone call from his party leader Tom Elliott.
“This evening Tom Elliott, the Ulster Unionist Leader, informed me by telephone that, because of an article in last Monday’s Belfast Telegraph, he was removing me as Deputy Chair of the Assembly Education Committee but not withdrawing the party whip,” Mr McNarry said in the statement.
“In response, I informed him that, in that case, I was, with immediate effect, resigning from the Ulster Unionist Assembly Group.”
Mr McNarry has been elected as an MLA for the constituency of Strangford since 2003. Previous to that he served as one of former First Minister David Trimble’s special advisors.
