Merchant opens New Chapter with open air hot-tub

THE idea may sound unorthodox given the unpredictability of Northern Irish weather, but having a bubbled massage with a full view of the Albert Clock will soon become a reality.

A 16m extension to the five-star Merchant hotel is ready for its public unveiling this Saturday after only months in the making.

Speaking at a preview launch, the hotel's owner, Bill Wolsey said: "I am absolutely delighted to see the 'New Chapter' finally complete. This project has been a labour of love.

"The finish is absolutely spectacular and I am confident that we have created a landmark that the people of Belfast can continue to take pride in."

With views over Belfast from the reflective dome of Victoria Square to the green patches of Cave Hill and round to Scrabo, what the hotel claims as Belfast's first ever roof-top garden can hired out for private functions. It has canopies to cover guests during any sporadic showers.

Planning functions in the themed "Rita Duffy Room" will take extra time and consideration as guests have the option of altering the lighting colour to suit the mood of their function.

Similarly, they can give diners and delegates a breath of fresh air by pumping the room with up to 30 per cent more oxygen after a hearty wedding meal or a long conference speech.

On the sixth floor an electronic card operated high-tech gym is lined with a panoramic balcony, with the outdoor hot tub and a Swedish inspired sauna.

And as for the bedrooms – 38 new rooms have been fashioned with silk-lined beds, custom made furniture pieces and a touch of 1930s art.

At the end of the day guests may want to sip on a cocktail in Berts – a live jazz bar located on the ground floor just beside the new entrance to the hotel on Skipper Street.
