Move over King Billy, meet the new Orange superhero
COULD a new cartoon hero be the end for King Billy? In a bid to make the Orange Order more relevant to young people today the Order has unveiled a cartoon hero character and has launched a competition to find a suitable name for him.
Director of services David Hume said the "modern and vibrant" character has "gone down extremely well" so far.
He said: "We want to make the Orange Order nore relevant to the young and appear less stuffy."
David reassured people the hero was not a replacement for King Billy and was "really a bit of good fun".
The campaign to bring the order closer to Northern Ireland's youth is already underway through the distribution of 20,000 booklets on the history of Orangeism to schools.
Stating the response to the booklet had been "fantastic" David said more may even have to be printed and that its success had "encouraged us to think about how we relate to the younger generation".
The Order is now keen for its new hero with a catchy name to be seen on the world stage.
With trademark superhero pearlywhite smile and thick shock of blonde hair, it is no surprise the Oramge hero wears a lycra-type suit of orange with a purple cape - a nod to the Royal Black Institution no doubt.
What his actual superpowers are have not yet been revealed.
The competition to name the hero is open to anyone and suggestions should be sent to Orange Order headquarters at Schomberg House, 368 Cregagh Road, Belfast BT6 9EY.
The closing date is January 10.
