OAP who died after bus stop fall is named
John Hickey died outside central library
A PENSIONER who died after sustaining injuries at a Belfast city centre bus stop was named yesterday.
John Hickey, who lived in the north of the city, died at the Royal Victoria Hospital on Saturday night.
Mr Hickey fell at the bus stop outside Belfast Central Library on Royal Avenue at around 4.30pm on January 21.
Police are currently trying to establish why the 72-year-old man fell on the busy Saturday afternoon. A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm but was later released to appear back with police for further inquiries.
The family of the deceased man have released his picture to the media.
The PSNI are renewing their appeal for witnesses to come forward with any information they may have. They are particularly keen to speak to a nurse who administered help to the man, who sustained a head injury in the incident.
North Belfast UUP councillor David Browne also appealed for witnesses to come forward and extended his sympathy to Mr Hickey’s family circle.
“This is an extremely sad incident and having recently lost a close family member I can understand the heartache the family must be suffering. My heart goes out to them,” the Alderman said.
“Any loss of life is regrettable but when this sort of thing happens during such a routine thing as waiting for a bus, it is truly shocking. If there was any foul play at all involved in this incident I fully condemn it.”
North Belfast SDLP councillor Pat Convery also extended his sympathy to Mr Hickey’s family.
“Any sudden death is always a shock and my thoughts and prayers are with the deceased man’s family,” Mr Convery said. “I hope witnesses will come forward so that this incident can be fully investigated by police.”
Anyone who has information on the circumstances of Mr Hickey’s injury should contact North Queen Street Police Station on 028 9056 1812.
