POLICE RESOURCES 'WOEFULLY LOW' SAYS LISBURN COMMANDER
LISBURN'S police commander Chief Inspector David Moore has said that resources within the PSNI are "woefully low".
Mr Moore was speaking at the recent meeting of the District Policing Partnership (DPP) after he was asked how lacking resources were in Killultagh and Dunmurry.
CI Moore responded: "With regards to resources, we are woefully low. We are struggling at the minute as an organisation, particularly in terms of finance, we have huge debts, as most companies do."
Chief Inspector Moore said that the current financial situation is affecting the resources available and said that "anyone who denies that isn't facing up to it.
"In terms of money and police officers, we're being cut. Policing is important, but equally education is important, as are hospitals. Everyone is being cut. We have to accept that what it was like won't be as it will be in the future and we have to make the best of what we have."
Councillor Bill Gardiner-Watson asked the Chief Inspector whether the global economic downturn would see a rise in crime, to which he responded that a rise in crime is likely.
He said there had already been an increase in fraud and forgery and that an increase in violent crime was likely as the financial situation carried on, with for example, those dependent on drugs became more desperate to support their habits.
Mr Moore added: "When people don't have money they resort to dangerous measures."
