Police launch Armagh murder inquiry

POLICE have launched a murder inquiry after the body of a 32-year-old man was found in Armagh.

The victim - named locally as Kevin Fletcher - was found dead just before midday on Friday at an apartment in the city's Castle Street where he lived alone.

Detectives have released no further details and the apartment, in the shadow St Patrick's cathedral was still being examined by scenes of crime officers last night.

A relative of Mr Fletcher, who arrived at the scene, said: I don't know the circumstances, but we're shocked at this. We can't understand this."

Neighbours described the deceased as "a wuiet man who always had a friendly word".

One woman, who did not want to be named, said: "A friend of mine said he was at bingo last night and seemed a bit quiet.

"I said hello to him in afternoon as he walked his wee dog.

"This is a quiet area, and we can't take in what has happened, and Kevin certainly didn't deserve this. Nobody does.

"I saw a police car pull up at about 10 minutes to 12, and when we heard what happened we were really shocked.

"The Fletchers are a well-known family in Armagh and well respected. Kevin was unemployed and lived a quiet life."

Police said that a post-mortem was being arranged and appealed for witnesses.
