Police rescue woman from canal

A WOMAN has been dramatically rescued from the Newry canal by two police officers.

Police were made aware of a woman in the canal at Merchants Quay at around 3.45am.

Responding officers jumped into the water and brought the woman back to the canal bank where ambulance staff were waiting.

The woman is not believed to have sustained any serious injuries but has been taken to hospital.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Sam Cordner has commended the officers involved.

He said: "The swift actions of the two local response officers undoubtedly saved this woman's life. Their bravery should serve as an example to all of us and underlines the kind of commitment all local officers have to providing a first class emergency service to the people of Newry."
