Ram-raid attack opposite police station
A RAM-raid attack on a chemist store - opposite a closed police station in Co Armagh - will further undermine public confidence in security, it has been claimed.
Police say the thieves, who made off with a quantity of aftershave and perfume, drove a stolen red Seat Leon through the front of the building in Markethill at around 3.30am yesterday.
The car is believed to have been stolen from a property on Tullysaran Road, Armagh between 8.30pm on Tuesday night and the time of the incident.
Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kennedy said such an audacious robbery in front of a police station would fuel fears of further attacks.
"Here we have another act of serious criminality in a rural town, and there is a certain bitter irony, in that it happened just in front of a police station, which is now closed," said Mr Kennedy.
"There are serious concerns now that these gangs are being given a free rein after the closure of so many police stations. People now feel vulnerable and exposed to these gangs, who are targeting cash machines, banks and businesses.
"I opposed the closure of this station in Markethill and unfortunately this growing trend of criminality in towns right across the Province, is realising the fears that had been expressed by many at the time."
