RIOTS: Fourth night of violence

Baton rounds were fired by police during a fourth night of trouble in north Belfast last night.

Two men in their late teens and early 20s were arrested, after the latest trouble which saw a car was set on fire and petrol bombs thrown.

Yesterday - a coffee jar bomb was found during an alert in the Highbury Gardens area. The army was called to the scene.

Policing board member Basil McCrea who was at Ardoyne with senior PSNI officers to observe, defended the way the police were handling the trouble.

"I am quite convinced that the tactics they are using are the right ones. But it does take a lot of time and it does tie up a lot of police officers," he said.

"It is probably the best of a bad situation."

On Wednesday a senior police officer said there would be arrests in coming days after detectives had studied CCTV footage.

A Police spokesman detailed last night's violence:

Shortly before 8pm, a number of youths began to gather in the Brompton, Twadell and shopfronts areas.

A car was stolen from Duneden Gardens was set alight at the junctions of Brompton Park and Crumlin Road. Initial enquiries suggest that a woman was stepping into her parked car when she was pulled from the car and the vehicle stolen.

The area was calm by around 2am.

A male aged in his early 20s was arrested and was released pending further enquiries.

A male aged in his late teens was arrested and is continuing to assist police with their enquiries.

Police continued to monitor the area throughout the morning.

A full and thorough investigation is continuing. Police will seek to identify and arrest those involved.
