Schoolgirl rescued after rocks fall

A 14-year-old Spanish girl was recovering on Sunday after being rescued after a fall on Northern Ireland's north coast.

The teenager on a visit to the province was clambering over rocks near Portrush in an area known as Port na Happle, when she slipped and injured herself.

Friends raised the alarm and both Portrush lifeboats were launched and an Irish coastguard helicopter sent from Sligo.

Paramedics and a coastguard team got to the girl and managed to carry her across the rocks by stretcher.

Two local people who had gone to the teenager's aid and two of her friends were also helped to safety.

The girl was taken to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, Co Antrim for treatment to injuries which were not believed to be life threatening.

Coastguard station officer Chris Little said: "Even though this only involved one casualty this was a full scale rescue.

"There were approximately a dozen people at the scene carrying out the rescue and in order to make sure that they were safe, should something have happened to them, we made sure all the other units were in place."
