Shannon selected to run in Strangford
DUP MLA Jim Shannon has been selected to contest the Strangford constituency at the General Election in May.
Iris Robinson held the seat for the DUP since 2001 but stepped down earlier this year for personal reasons.
Mr Shannon has been a member of Ards Borough Council since 1985 and has
been a member of the Assembly since it was formed in 1998.
He said he felt "honoured and humbled" to be selected last night after the party meeting.
"I have a very strong record of hard work and effort for my constituents that I can stand over in this election.
"Whilst others may flit from one job to another before deciding that they fancy a run at Parliament, I have devoted the last 25 years of
my life to working for the people of this great constituency both at a local government and Assembly level.
"In Westminster I'll be an unfettered voice and I'll do what is right for Northern Ireland."
Former UTV presenter and Victims Commissioner Mike Nesbitt has been selected to run for the Ulster Unionist Party in the same constituency
while former DUP councillor Terry Williams will represent Traditional
Unionist Voice.
