Stamp to mark King James Bible's 400th anniversary
THE most famous English translation of the Bible is to be commemorated by a special set of Royal Mail stamps.
The stamp – set to be produced next year – will be issued in time to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the King James, or “Authorised”, version of the Bible.
The move was prompted by numerous requests from the public, one of which came from DUP MLA Mervyn Storey.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Royal Mail can confirm that the 400th anniversary of the publication of the Authorised King James Version of the Bible will be marked on a special stamp set to be issued during 2011.”
Completed in 1611, the King James Version was a lengthy and costly process, with the King’s printer, Robert Barker, claiming that he spent 3,000 on the publication.
Mr Storey said he was delighted that the Bible was being celebrated by the stamps.
“I am glad that Royal Mail have recognised the importance of this anniversary and of the monumental impact that the KJV has had on society,” he said.
The stamp will be issued towards the end of 2011.
