Teenager dies in quad crash

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy has died in an accident involving a quad bike in Co Londonderry.

The crash, also involving a 16-year-old boy who is in a critical condition in hospital, occurred on the Craigmore Road in Maghera at around 10pm on Thursday night.

It is understood that the PSNI helicopter was involved in attempting to locate the teenagers.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident.

The victim has been named locally as Paddy McErlean.

Maghera councillor Kathleen Lagan, who knows the victim and his family extremely well, offered her sympathy following the tragic accident.

"I know that the community, who hold the young boy and his family in such high esteem, will gather around and offer help or support during the tough times ahead. It may be of little consolation to the family but it shows just how well they are thought of in the community," the SDLP woman said.

"I also hope the other young boy injured in the incident makes a speedy and full recovery from his injuries. At the moment our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and family. This is also a terrible time for them."
