Thugs are blamed for burning kitten

ANIMAL cruelty has reached a shocking new low in Northern Ireland, after the body of a young kitten that had been either burned by a hot object or set on fire was discovered this week.

Vandals, who have been responsible for a spate of serious attacks in Newtownards, are being blamed for the sickening attack on the kitten, whose charred remains were found outside a former chicken factory on the Portaferry Road at the weekend.

David Wilson from the USPCA described the attack as "abhorrent".

"It just unbelievable that young people could do this, it is abhorrent, sickening and shocking," said Mr Wilson.

The animal welfare officer said it was unclear whether the kitten had been alive when it was set on fire or burned.

"Because of the extent of burns, we simply cannot tell if it was alive. But either way, it is repulsive that the body of an animal can be mutilated in such an horrific manner.

"What is going through the mind of someone who does this – what type of person are they? I would appeal for any young person who knows about this to come forward to police or the USPCA."

Strangford Assembly member, Jim Shannon expressed his shock at the incident, which he said comes after an escalation in anti-social behaviour in the area.

"This is one of the most despicable things that I have ever witnessed and the smell of burning hung in the air days after the event had taken place."

Mr Shannon said he had been contacted by local residents after the animal's burnt remains were found. A meeting was held with the PSNI to formulate a plan of action.

"The burning alive of a young kitten has shown that things have reached an all-time low and the good people of the East End of the town will not be taking anymore.

"Their names are known and the PSNI with the full support of local residents and elected representatives will be coordinating a plan of action that will give these thugs the boot from their spate of vandalism and shocking behaviour," he added.

Police in Ards, who said they were aware of the attack on the cat, are treating anti-social behaviour and underage drinking in the Londonderry Park area as a priority.

"It is our intention to continue with such a robust response until we see a positive reaction from those involved. Another operation is planned for this coming weekend," said Ards Area Commander Phil Knox.
