TOP GREEN AWARD FOR LISBURN ECO-VILLAGE

A LISBURN housing development has received a prestigious environment award.

Woodbrook, in Brokerstown, was announced as the winner of the RSPB/RTPI's Planning Award in the Urban Areas and Built Developments section.

The award, given by Europe's largest conservation charity and the UK's leading planning association, recognises the excellent work by the building sector in constructing buildings which lead the way in environmentally friendly design.

Christopher Carvill of the Carvill Group, the developers of the project said: "At Carvill we work very hard to develop innovative, sustainable housing married with high quality design. To be recognized for this work is very rewarding and we aim to further develop our ideas in the future to maintain and progress our thinking.

"I would like to thank RTPI and RSPB for awarding us this accolade and look forward to developing our relationship with them in the future."

Action Renewables, one of the sponsors of the project, were "incredibly pleased" that Woodbrook had won.

"It is ground breaking what The Carvill Group has achieved through their innovation and forward thinking design to create an eco-village in a prime location encompassing renewables and energy efficiencies," said Acting Director Terry Waugh.

Aidan Lonergan, Director RSPB commented: "From its consideration of a community life centred around a village green, to the energy-saving steps taken to ensure that carbon emissions are reduced, to the use of biomass as a source of renewable fuel, Woodbrook has demonstrated the very best in environmental design."

The RTPI commented on the importance of a development like Woodbrook being highlighted as an example of excellent planning.
