Tribute to former editor

TUV leader Jim Allister has said the death of the former editor of the Ballymena Guardian was "not just a huge loss for his family but for the entire town and district of Ballymena".

Maurice O’Neill, 71, died on Wednesday in his family home after years of ill health.

Jim Allister said: “For decades he was a colossus of local journalism, ever close to the heartbeat of the town on every issue.”

The 71-year-old’s nephew, Shaun O’Neill, who worked alongside his uncle said he died surrounded by his family. Maurice O’Neill was awarded the OBE for services to journalism. His funeral will be held tomorrow at Wellington Presbyterian Church in Ballymena at 2pm.
