Truth process ‘must include Dublin and IRA’
ONGOING talks between the government and political parties about dealing with the past will not be allowed to result in a one-sided process which lets Dublin and the IRA off the hook, an MP says.
Jeffrey Donaldson was speaking after BBC NI Spotlight probed allegations of IRA-Dublin collusion.
Mr Donaldson, who took part in the documentary, said last night: “There are ongoing discussions between the political parties and the Secretary of State [about the past] and we are making it clear that if republicans want some sort of truth process, will we require them and the Irish government to tell the truth about their role.”
In the documentary, Dublin journalist Kevin Myers said: “Fianna Fail government ministers actively encouraged the formation of the Provisional IRA, actively fed government funds to the IRA.
“They helped to arm the IRA, they gave moral support to the IRA.”
Former Sunday Times journalist Chris Ryder added: “They were sympathetic to the cause of a united Ireland, that was official Irish policy. Now the Irish state of course couldn’t engage in a war with Britain to do that, and so there were elements there who said, let the IRA do the dirty work.”
