(Tuesday, August 29) Hunger strike events an 'insult to victims'

The staging of hunger strike commemoration events in a north Antrim parish centre at the weekend has been described as an "insult to victims" of republican violence, an MLA for the area said yesterday.

DUP Assemblyman Mervyn Storey said he was extremely disappointed that the centre on the outskirts of Dunloy had been permitted to be used for what he termed an "insensitive" display.

"No one should be surprised at republicans hijacking any venue following on from Casement Park," he said.

"The hunger strike commemorations are only being used as another weapon in what republicans would describe as 'the struggle'."

Mr Storey said organisers were "presenting the hunger strikers as heroes, champions of a just causeand peoplewho should bevenerated", where in fact they were "responsible for some of the mostvile terrorist crimes".

"It is an insult to the victims in north Antrim that such an event should take place and displays great insensitivity.

"Itproves yet again that despite all the words from republicans, they believe that what the IRA was engaged in was right and should be remembered in this way," he said.
