Ulster vet wins discrimination case

A ZIMBABWEAN-born vet has been paid £50,000 by a Stormont government department.

The Department of Agriculture has agreed to the settlement and apologised to Dr Crispin Madavo, who claimed internal disciplinary proceedings against him were acts of victimisation.

Dr Madavo was a practising vetinary official in Coleraine.

He had earlier brought a case of alleged racial discrimination to the department in 1999.

Three years ago he brought a further case alleging to have been victimised because of the previous proceedings.

The vet had been subject to a series of internal disciplinary hearings.

Dr Madavo, who was backed by the Equality Commission, believed he was punished "simply for refusing to accept treatment" which he thought "amounted to unlawful discrimination".

"I am happy to see the matter finally resolved with the acceptance by the Department that I had acted reasonably in pursuing my concerns, and in the rescinding of the disciplinary action incorrectly taken against me," he said.
