Ulster's very own 'big breakfast'
ULSTER'S favourite breakfast has just got a whole lot bigger.
Diners at a Fermanagh hotel now can treat themselves to an Ulster fry that piles on the ingredients by the dozen.
The massive feed at Mahon's Hotel in Irvinestown features a whopping 12 sausages, 12 slices of bacon, 12 eggs, 12 pieces of potato bread, 12 soda farls, 12 tomatoes, 12 mushrooms - and 144 beans.
OPINION: Grilled food 'a healthier option'
If all this were not enough, hungry souls can also have as many mugs of tea, glasses of orange juice and slice of toast as they require, all for the appetising price of 39.99.
The brainchild behind undoubtedly 'Ulster's biggest breakfast' - hotel proprietor Joe Mahon - revaled the concept came about after hearing about a similarly large meal in the Republic.
"I read a story about a fella in Cavan providing a big breakfast with 10 slices of everything, so we thought we would go one better and do one with a dozen of everything," he told the News Letter.
The hotelier ciams the big fry-up has become a topic of conversation in the lakeland county.
"The interest has been good," he said.
"It has grabbed the imagination of people, especially the 144 beans. We couldn't do 12 beans so we decided on twelve-twelve beans which is 144. We count them out with a cocktail stick."
While the large breakfast has only been on the menu for a number of weeks, the mammoth dish has already been consumed - albeit by two people.
"A man came in at the weekend and bought one for his friend's 30th birthday," Joe explained.
"He told him he was going to Mahon's for breakfast but he didn't tell him what it was and he got the shock of his life when he sat down to eat it."
"He managed to eat the whole thing although his friend gave him a hand."
While many nutritionists may slam the unique fry as a 'heart attack on a plate', the Fermanagh businessman tends to be more open-minded.
"We try to keep it as healthy as we can by grilling all of the food and using as little grease as possible."
Asked whether he had personally tickled his tastebuds with his own creation, Joe replied: "I tried it but I didn't get it finished. I got about halfway through it. The wife was giving out she didn't want me to eat it at all, but I walked the dog a couple of extra mile that day."
The Irvinestown hotelier is renowned for his "wacky" ideas having organised a turkey parade last year and introduced a wolf-whistling competition to the Lady of the Lake festival this summer.
Explaining his latest masterpiece, Joe added: "I just thought it would be something that would go with our new menu. These ideas seem to come to me at 3am in the morning after a couple of pints."
Anyone who successfully cleans the plate will also collect a special certificate to mark their achievement.
