Ulsterman dies after Iraq blast
A BELFAST man has been killed by a bomb in Iraq, it was confirmed last night.
Ian Chalmers, from the east of the city, is understood to have died after he was fatally injured by a roadside bomb in the Al-kut area on Sunday.
The former soldier, who is believed to have been in his 20s, was working as a private contractor for the British security company Aegis, which has a contract with the United States government to protect civilians and soldiers travelling in Iraq.
When asked about Mr Chalmers last night, an Aegis spokeswoman said: "He was killed in action, that was his name and he did work for the company. Beyond that, I cannot comment."
The Foreign Office said it was not able to divulge details of the latest British fatality in Iraq.
It is understood that Mr Chalmers was in a vehicle which was hit by a roadside bomb on Sunday but that he died from his injuries on Monday.
Lord Mayor of Belfast Jim Rodgers said last night he was "devastated by yet another tragedy".
He added: "My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult and trying time and if I can be of assistance I will do whatever I can."
According to BBC Online, Mr Chalmers was aged 26.
