UUP holds talks with Orange Order

ULSTER Unionist representatives have met with the head of the Orange Order to discuss the proposed changes to parading legislation.

Led by MLAs Fred Cobain and David McNarry, the UUP delegation also included the party's parades spokesman Michael Copeland.

The meeting on Tuesday with Grand Master Robert Saulters, which was held at the request of the UUP, allowed for a discussion on the Draft Public Assemblies Parades and Protests Bill (NI).

In a joint statement issued after the meeting, Fred Cobain and David McNarry said: "We appreciate the time afforded to us today by the Grand Master. Our discussion was full and frank and focused on the specific issue of the Draft Bill being promoted jointly by Sinn Fein and the DUP.

"We requested the talks in order to hear the views of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, and for the Grand Master to be appraised of our sincere and legitimate concerns about the Bill."

Further debate on the proposed new legislation will take place when it comes before the Assembly after summer recess.

The MLAs' statement added: "What took place was a private discussion which will be reported back to our respective senior colleagues."
