VIDEO: Shankill bomb victim on Eames-Bradley

A MAN who lost his wife in the Shankill bomb believes a compensation payment proposal for victims has only "poisoned the atmosphere".

Alan McBride was responding to recommendations by the Consultative Group on the Past, who published their proposals in Belfast yesterday.

His wife Sharon, and father-in-law John Frizell, were among the nine people killed in the explosion in the fish shop in October 1993.

Speaking to the News Letter immediately after hearing Lord Eames and Denis Bradley addresse an assembled audience, Mr McBride admitted there were some positive aspects in the report but these were overshadowed by the compensation issue.

"I think it was unfortunate that the 12,000 payment was announced because that has just incensed and angered people," he said.

"In terms of the legacy commission, the reconciliation forum and the timescale - we can't look at these things forever and a day - there are good things within it (the report) but the 12,000 has taken the focus off it and poisoned the atmosphere."

Mr McBride expressed his wish that people read the report in its entirety and don't "give a knee-jerk reaction".
