Woman acquitted of strangling baby son

A Fermanagh woman charged with murdering her newborn son has walked free after being acquitted.

Wendy Johnston, 34, from Spruce Hill in Irvinestown, was charged with strangling her baby last February.

However in a surprise move on Wednesday the Public Prosecution Service said they were no longer offering any evidence against her.

But she had to stay in jail until today because, legally, a jury had to find her not guilty. The jury was sworn in today at Laganside Court in Belfast and instructed to find her not guilty.
