WOMAN FENDS OFF HIJACKING ATTEMPT

A 25-year-old woman fought off a hijacker who attempted to steal her car at traffic lights in Lisburn last night (Wednesday).

The woman was waiting for the lights to change on Hillhall Road around 10pm when a man opened her car door and attempted to get in.

She managed to push and kick him away from her black BMW before a number of people came to help her.

The man fled down Largymore Link towards the Saintfield roundabout. Police have appealed for information.

Lagan Valley MLA Trevor Lunn expressed his shock at the attempted hijacking.

Councillor Lunn said: "This must have been an extremely distressing event. I must congratulate her on resisting this man's attempts to steal her car.

"Several people upon seeing this crime came to offer assistance and they should be rightly commended.

"This man may try this again and he might be successful, so I would urge anybody who has any information about this attempted car hijack to contact the police."
