A 13-year-old boy, understood to be from Dublin, has died after he was seriously injured in a motorbike crash in Magilligan.

The PSNI said they are “investigating a sudden death on behalf of the coroner in relation to an incident in the Seacoast Road, Limavady yesterday, Thursday, 25 August”.

It is understood the crash happened at about 1.20pm on Thursday.

An Irish Coastguard Rescue helicopter from Sligo was involved in airlifting the boy.

He was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

SDLP MLA Gerry Mullan offered his condolences to the boy’s family.

“This is tragic and my thoughts are with the boy’s family. The local community is reeling from the news of another serious accident at this track within the last six months has resulted in the death of a Dublin teenager. I want to offer my deepest condolences to the family,” said Mr. Mullan.

“The sand dunes in this area provide the perfect location for this type of activity, and has become very popular with some of the best riders in the UK who come here. Motocross by its nature is a dangerous sport and the daredevil aspect is appealing to many people. I am aware there is now an investigation and again just wish to offer my sympathies to the family.”

DUP Colr. Alan Robinson also offered his condolences: “I’m sure everyone will agree when we extend our sincere and deepest sympathies to the family of the 13-yearold who has sadly died following yesterday’s incident at a dirt track in Magilligan. Unimaginable horror to lose a child and, for that, a dark cloud hangs over the Roe Valley today.”

The incident is also being investigated by Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council.

A spokesperson said: “Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council were notified yesterday afternoon of a serious accident involving a young person at a Motocross premises in Magilligan. Officers from the Council attended the scene immediately and investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing.”
