A gathering of banners and flags will take place in Dungannon this Saturday to mark the upcoming centenary of the Battle of the Somme.

Hundreds of loyalist banners from across the Province are expected to be carried on parade through the town, many bearing illustrations of the 36th Ulster Division.

Run by the Killyman District Cultural Group, the parade begins at noon at Lord Northland Memorial Park.

The Parades Commission lists 39 bands as being in the running to take part.

It has the backing of all the major loyal orders.

Chairman Kenneth Montgomery said: “Bannerfest is a unique event and a fitting tribute to our relatives and all who served their King and country during a terrible and bloody war.

“Our committee is pleased to have the official support from the heads of the main Loyal Orders and we invite all Loyal Order Colours to mass and parade in Dungannon where you, your family and friends will be warmly welcomed as we gather with pride to remember.”
