A man died after a lorry and car collided on Tuesday afternoon on the main Limavady to Coleraine road.

The man, named locally as Kyle Simmons, was in the car with a friend who was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital.

He remained in a stable condition last night but the hospital said they were unable to give any further update at present.

Police said the accident unfolded on the Broad Road outside Limavady shortly before 2.20pm, when the large commercial Volvo truck and a Peugeot 306 struck each other.

The road was shut down in the wake of the incident.

Three ambulances and the fire brigade attended the scene.

Limavady Mayor Gerry Mullan said it was an awful tragedy for the town.

“I want to send my condolences to the family of the deceased man,” he told the News Letter. “We as local representatives do our best in conjunction with the PSNI to try and make the roads as safe as possible so it is just awful when something like this happens.”
