UUP MLA Tom Elliott has called on the Western Health and Social Care Trust to intervene in the case of a privately-run care home which is closing.

Mr Elliott said that he had been approached in recent weeks by families of several residents of Shannagh Nursing Home in Belleek who have “fears that it could soon be closing”.

Mr Elliott said that the home had a good reputation in the area and that the trust “should be looking at this case and recognising that it cannot afford to let the home close”.

He said: “With an ageing population it is inevitable that facilities such as the Shannagh care home are going to come under increasing demand in years to come.”

In a statement, the Western trust said that it “very much regrets that the decision to close the home had to be taken but recognises the challenges that nursing home providers face”.

“The trust wishes to acknowledge the long years of dedication and service provision to older people by Hugh Tunney and his staff which has been greatly appreciated by residents, families and the local community.

“In response to this decision, trust staff will work in partnership with Mr Tunney to support the number of trust clients within the home and their families through the transition to suitable alternative accommodation.”
