A SECOND phase of growth at Newry based Murdock Builder’s Merchants is set to create five new jobs as the building supplies firm prepares to expand its recently opened roof truss manufacturing division.
Founded 30 years ago last year, the expansion will introduce include space joist design and production in a new 4,000sqft facility representing an investment of £250,000.
Building on the success of the truss division which opened in June 2011, the new facility is equipped with the latest design software and production machinery to offer high quality, cost efficient solutions to the construction sector.
The decision to expand the manufacturing facility so soon after opening reflects the growing demand from building contractors for efficient, high quality alternatives to traditional labour-intensive floor and roofing systems.
The team from Murdock regards this as an exciting and timely development as Paul Sheppard, senior manager responsible for the manufacturing operation explained.
“The space joist metal web joint system is a modern, efficient alternative to traditional floor and roof joists.
“Their lightweight construction provides on-site savings in labour by eliminating the need for drilling or notching during installation, while their long spans means there is reduced need for intermediate load bearing walls. The significantly reduces labour time, wastage and construction costs.”
According to chief executive Ann Morgan, the latest investment demonstrates how the company continues to listen and respond to the needs of its customers.
“We’ve had an overwhelmingly positive response to our roof truss manufacturing division since it opened last year. This recent investment, which incorporates the latest in design technology, allows us to provide highly technical expertise and cost effective solutions to our customers who want to reduce costs without compromising on quality or efficiency.”
Although the design and production facilities are based in Newry, advice and information on both roof trusses and space joists are available from each of Murdock’s nine regional branches (www.murdockbuildersmerchant.com or www.murdockrooftrusses.com).
The service is of particular relevance to architects and surveyors and will be a main feature of the Self Build Show in The King’s Hall, Belfast in February and also at the Balmoral Show in May. The Murdock team has also developed a continuing professional development (CPD) presentation specifically for architects to ensure they are fully up to date with the service and the benefits it offers.
