The event will also feature a range of other speakers including Diane Dodds MEP, former head of the European Commission in Belfast Dennis Kennedy and Irish Government agricultural economist Dr Thia Hennessy.

The debate which will take place at the Belfast Harbour Commissioner’s office on Friday June 3, is co-hosted by Turley PR and Public Affairs will allow members of MNI to put questions directly to the panel, whilst the arguments both for and against leaving the EU will be summarised by former county court judge Brian Garrett.

MNI Chief Executive Stephen Kelly said the organisation felt that it needed to host the event in order to provide clear information on the possible consequences of staying within or leaving the EU for its members;

“Earlier this year we conducted a survey of our members and the issue of the EU referendum was the number one concern for manufacturing companies. Available analysis shows NI would be most impacted by the result of this referendum, and many of the 500 plus members of Manufacturing NI voiced deep concerns both over the impact of a possible ‘Leave’ outcome and also as a result of the ongoing uncertainty which the referendum is creating.

“While some members instinctively felt either for or against the referendum, they all felt that it was difficult to navigate the claim and counterclaim to make a reasoned decision. This event will hopefully go some way towards providing that clarity.”

He added: “We were absolutely delighted when Lord Mandelson, who has the highest level experience both here in Northern Ireland and at EU level indicated that he would attend.”
