One of Belfast's most famous landmarks is facing a new chapter its history following the sale of the Belfast Telegraph building to a Tyrone property development firm.

On the market at around £6 million the property on Rotal Avenue has been bought by McAleer and Rushe which currently has several projects under way in the city centre.

“I am delighted to confirm that McAleer and Rushe has exchanged contracts to acquire the landmark Belfast Telegraph building,” said property director Stephen Surphlis.

“This is a very exciting acquisition for the company.

“We are looking forward to working up proposals for this well-known building, which will enhance our city and give a further boost to our local economy.”

The sale brings to an end a history of newspaper publishing spanning more than 130 years, as the Telegraph’s owners Independent News and Media announced last summer it was ending its printing operations in Belfast to concentrate on facilities in Newry.

No indication has been given yet as to where editorial and other staff may relocate.

A number of options have already been revealed for the future use of the building ranging from a combination of hotel and office space to student accommodation for students given the close proximity to the new University of Ulster Belfast campus.

McAleer and Rushe is currently building a new headquarters for Belfast City Council and is preparing for a hotel on the former Belfast Metropolitan College building on Brunswick Street.
