NI enjoys its hottest day of warm spell as temps hit 25C (77F)

It was the hottest day of the current warm spell yesterday in Northern Ireland, with the mercury reaching 25.2 Celsius (77F) in Castlederg and Aldergrove.

It was the ninth consecutive day in which temperatures passed 20 C somewhere in the Province, including temperatures of 23.2 at Derrylin in Fermanagh last Wednesday and 22.5C at nearby Thomastown on Saturday. On Sunday the thermometer reached 24.5C at the Giant’s Causeway in north Antrim.

Meanwhile, new data shows that it was warmer than average last month.

Armagh Observatory also recorded that it was the driest and sunniest May at Armagh since 2008.

The mean temperature at Armagh was 12.1 Celsius, around 1.5 degrees C warmer than the long-term (1796-2010) average May at Armagh. The warmest day was 23.3 C, on May 9. May 2016 provided 209.6 hours of strong sunshine, compared to a 30-year average of 173.3 hours.
