UKIP MLA David McNarry is calling for the Assembly to limit the length of time a party can control one ministry, claiming that Sinn Fein has caused significant damage to education in Northern Ireland.
“Sinn Fein has had control of education for 15 years now and that is 15 years too many,” he said.
“In order to save education it is time we put a new rule into place which stops any party from holding a ministry for more than two Assembly terms, or eight years.”
He believes that education minister John O’Dowd is using the Common Funding Formula “to drive social change”.
“I am being contacted by thousands of constituents complaining that the minister is cutting between £20-40,000 from their annual budget,” he said.
The MLA says the money is being diverted to schools with a higher proportion of children receiving free school dinners, or perceived social need.
“It is outrageous,” he said. “Taking this money away from some schools could end up depriving children in schools which lose funding.”
The Department of Education had not commented at the time of going to press last night.
