NI Tories committed to Union

editorial image

editorial image

IN response to J Doogan’s letter (December 29), there can be no doubt about the Northern Ireland Conservatives’ commitment to the Union.

We are the party that is most committed to Northern Ireland playing a full and constructive role in the politics of the United Kingdom.

NI Conservatives have no objection to groups cooperating to strengthen the Union.

However, our place in the UK has never been more secure, as confirmed by the latest census results and countless opinion polls.

The Unionist Forum is not likely to gain more support for the Union; on the contrary it is more likely to diminish it.

The aim of pro-Union parties should be to attract the many new voters from all sections of our community who want Northern Ireland to remain part of the UK and to represent everyone’s interests, rather than to build a single, sectarian bloc, based on narrow ideas about culture or identity.

Irwin Armstrong

Chair, NI Conservatives
