Election Diary: Candidate who condemns breast cancer ribbons and has list of words to avoid

Susan-Anne White, an independent candidate in West Tyrone, has yet to release her manifesto for this election but last year she stood on a platform of being “Biblically correct, not politically correct” and argued for both homosexuality and adultery to be “punishable offences”.

On her blog, Mrs White has set out strong views on many subjects. In March, she wrote an entry entitled “PC words Christians should not employ”, but stressed that it was “not an exhaustive list”.

She said: “DO NOT USE: Ms, spokesperson, chairperson etc, partner (except when combined with the words ‘business’ or ‘marriage’ as in business partner or marriage partner), pro-choice, sex worker, racist, sexist, ageist, Islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia (and NEVER EVER refer to a man pretending to be a woman as “she” and vice versa), climate change denier...”

In a substitute list of words to be used, she suggested “spokesman” in place of “spokesperson” and “prostitute or whoremonger” instead of “sex worker”.

In February, Mrs White held a meeting in Omagh’s Silverbirch Hotel in which she addressed the topic “calling evil good”. Publicising the event at the time, she said that there was “a general welcome to all but I request that females dress modestly”.

Last September she condemned the pink breast cancer awareness ribbons, saying: “Feminism has politicised breast cancer and because they have saturated society with propaganda about this disease, they have desensitised men who now speak openly about breast cancer, without any embarrassment or awkwardness.”

She added: “Feminists in the cancer charities are happy to use the colour pink to advance their agenda and the “war on breast cancer” is most definitely part of it.”

Anti-poster pledge from DUP man

A DUP candidate has condemned election posters as “a blot on the landscape” and pledged not to erect his own posters until a week before the May 5 poll.

East Londonderry candidate Maurice Bradley claimed that the posters which have been going up over the last fortnight are a danger to both motorists and livestock.

The former mayor of Coleraine said that he had travelled through Limavady at the weekend and was “amazed at the number of posters which have already been erected”, adding that “unfortunately, Coleraine is becoming just as bad”.

Mr Bradley said that he would be putting up posters, but would not do so until the week before the elections. And he pledged: “On the day of the election, as soon as polls are closed, I will be taking them down.”
