Five men have been arrested in the Irish Republic by police investigating dissident republican activity.
The men, with ages ranging from mid 50s to early 70s, were detained by officers from the Garda’s Special Detective Unit in Co Louth on Sunday night.
A Garda spokesman said: “They are detained at Drogheda and Dundalk Garda stations under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act.
“A suspect device was recovered during this operation which will be examined by a Defence Forces EOD team.”
The device was discovered in the Kilcurry area north of Dundalk close to the border.
It is understood the arrests followed a long-running surveillance operation.
